Escape from Gaza
Loay Elbasyouni is a Palestinian American scientific engineer with NASA and lives in Los Angeles. He has been a member of the team that sent the Perseverance rover to Mars in March 2020 and is a chief engineer for the design team of the Ingenuity robotic helicopter. "I felt that was easier than getting my parents out of Gaza."
He is originally from Gaza. His elderly parents live in Germany - their adopted country - but they were visiting Gaza when the war started in October. On Friday he finally got them out of the war stricken area and into Turkey. The family has been reunited in Istanbul. Loay first spoke to Weekend on the 23rd December, and he returned to the programme to tell us how his parents escaped.
