US House votes to impeach ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½land Secretary
Republican politicians accuse Alejandro Mayorkas of failing to enforce immigration laws resulting in a record surge of migrants across the Mexican border.
The US House of Representatives has voted to impeach President Biden's ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½land Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas. Republicans accuse him of failing to enforce immigration laws, resulting in a record surge of migrants across the Mexican border.
It's the first time in US history that a sitting cabinet secretary has been impeached. The resolution was approved by a one-vote margin, a week after a similar vote failed.
President Biden called it a blatant act of unconstitutional partisanship, and accused the Republicans of playing petty political games. Secretary Mayorkas is almost certain to be cleared by the Democrat-controlled senate.
Professor Frank Bowman of the Missouri School of Law testified to the impeachment panel in January warning them the secretary hadn't actually committed an impeachable offence. He told Newsday what he made of the vote.
"This is plainly wrong. All the examples the Republicans point to are simply instances where he is applying US law... using his discretion which is granted to him under statutes to do certain things. On at least a couple of points where they claim he violated the law the US Supreme Court has ruled exactly the opposite."
