Esther Ghey: 'It’s just not feasible as a parent to take a phone off a child permanently'

The mother of murdered teenager Brianna Ghey has spoken to 5 Live Breakfast about the challenges that mobile phones and social media create for children and parents.

“It was very difficult to manage what Brianna was accessing online."

“She was addicted to her phone,” she said.

Esther told 5 Live that removing Brianna’s phone for a short period of time noticeably improved her wellbeing.

But she acknowledges that removing phones completely from children’s lives is not realistic.

She is calling for social media companies to take more responsibility for children’s welfare online.

The Online Safety Bill became law in October 2023 and aims to make the internet safer for children.

Esther said the Bill is “a step in the right direction” but that it’s not enough at this moment in time.
