Scientists find the brightest object in the universe

Scientists believe they've identified the brightest ever object in the known universe.

The ultra luminous object in question is a quasar - and this one is said to be as bright as 500 trillion suns.

It's also powered by the hungriest and fastest-growing black hole ever seen.

It's all mind bending stuff so Newsday got Christian Wolf - an Associate Professor of Astro Physics at The Australian National University and part of the team who made the discovery - to break it down for non-scientists.

"About one million quasars are already known. This one is the most extreme we've found so far. We've been specialising in the most extreme ones. My bet would be we're not going to beat our own record now."
