'Significant Systemic Failings' at Hewell Prison

A Worcestershire prison has been criticised after a former worker was given a suspended sentence for misconduct following the death of a prisoner.

67 year old Graham Evans was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and 80 hours' unpaid work.

Mesut Olgun, a known suicide risk, was found dead in his cell less than 15 hours after arriving at HMP Hewell near Redditch.

The judge at Worcester Crown Court said said there were “significant systemic failings of the prison” but that Evans was not responsible for them.

Tammy Gooding spoke to Rodger Lawrence, who's the former chair of the Independent Monitoring Board at HMP Hewell.
