Female gambling addict: 'It went from funding nights out to trying to fund my rent'

Although gambling is often seen as an issue which mainly affects men, data from GambleAware suggests the number of women seeking treatment for gambling addiction has doubled in 5 years. But the majority of women affected do not seek help, with two in five unwilling to do so due to the stigma - and a lack of representation.

The charity Gordon Moody has designed a treatment program specifically to help women beat gambling addiction. One of them is Stacey Goodwin, who started gambling aged 18.

"It went from funding nights out to trying to fund my rent," Stacey told 5 Live's Naga Munchetty, "I genuinely didn't know an adult life without a gambling addiction."

"It's about escapism" Stacey said on the appeal of slot machines and easily accessed online gambling games such as bingo, "that tends to be the way that women go".
