The ‘terrifying’ end of the world rehearsal
Back in the 1950s, more than 20 thousand British service personnel were involved in nuclear bomb tests - in Australia and the South Pacific. Many veterans and their families went on to fight for compensation because they said exposure to nuclear tests had caused cancer and early deaths. There was also a long fight for recognition for their service, and last year the government finally confirmed that veterans would get medals. One of them is Watton’s Bob Darkin. Edd Smith went to meet him.
