There’s been some very famous names in the history of Everton Football Club, but what about George Farmer? He isn’t a well-known name but he is the man who started Everton on the path to where it is.

The midfielder made his debut in 1885 – just seven years after the club was founded – and he was the first ever professional player for the Blues. But after struggling with his health he died at just 42 and had a paupers grave in Anfield cemetery close to Goodison Park.

A service has been held at the cemetery, and a new headstone placed for George Farmer by the Everton Heritage Society, with members of his family present along with Blues legend Barry Horne.
