A further 拢1 million is needed to complete a sculpture featuring Essex singer Dame Vera Lynn. More than 拢600,000 has been raised for the memorial so far, which also features entertainers performing for the Armed Forces. Dame Vera was born in East Ham (then Essex) and later moved to Barking.

The memorial fund was established by Southend MP Sir David Amess.
