'Tragedy for Worcester' if Powick Bridge collapses
The Old Powick Bridge is one of the most historic structures in Worcester, dating to at least the fifteenth century, and was the site of key battles in the English Civil War.
The Old Powick Bridge is one of the most historic structures in Worcester, dating to at least the fifteenth century, and was the site of key battles in the English Civil War.
Daniel Daniels and David Robinson from the Battle Of Worcester Society tell our reporter Gavin Kermack why they feel not enough is being done to clear debris from the River Teme, which has caused the damage. They want urgent action to save the bridge from collapse.
Worcestershire County Council told us in a statement: "we are continuing to review the bridge's situation, and have been on site and cleared the latest debris from recent floods. We are working alongside partners to ensure we are able to stabilise ahead of next steps."
There has also been some suggestion that the opening of the weir further up the river is to blame for the excessive debris in the water, which is damaging the bridge.
The Environment Agency told us that "the weir was removed by the Unlocking the Severn project to allow the easier migration of the shad fish along the River Teme.
"Removal of the weir will not have increased the amount of debris against Powick Bridge or the rate is was flowing. That is dictated by the amount of debris washed into the river and the velocity of the watercourse at times of flood. This will vary from flood to flood and is a natural occurrence."
