Why it's OK to ask for a second medical opinion
Martha’s Rule, which allows for a second medical opinion - is currently being implemented across NHS England. It's named after the 13-year-old who died from sepsis when doctors failed to admit her to intensive care quickly enough, despite her parents raising concerns about her deteriorating condition.
Dr. Xand explains what the new rule means for seriously ill patients and their families and why, if you're ever struggling to get a diagnosis, you should never feel bad for requesting another medical professional take a look. He says what to bear in mind when asking, including why you'll be referred as a new patient and might have to consider travelling to a different hospital to be treated.
