Ofsted single word inspections: “An insult to my family and to my sister.”

Ruth Perry’s sister says the use of single word Ofsted judgements is wrong.

Julia Waters, the sister of headteacher Ruth Perry, who took her own life whilst waiting for an Ofsted report, is disappointed with the decision to keep single-phrase judgments for schools in England.

A coroner ruled a critical Ofsted report contributed to her death.

Julia has been speaking to 5 Live Breakfast’s Rachel Burden. She says it’s “an insult to my family and an insult to my sister”.

She says we need a better inspection system that is “genuinely supportive” and helps the schools that need improvement and not one that “destroys lives, livelihoods and the whole school community.”

“They’re not fair, they’re not proportionate, they don’t give an accurate reflection of a school’s strengths and areas for improvement.”

The Department for Education says one-word judgements like ‘outstanding’ or ‘inadequate’ give parents the confidence in choosing the right school for their child and provide a clear basis for taking action to improve underperforming schools.
