‘It’s about time we had an LGBT veterans memorial’

Kevin Bazeley from Worcester was sacked by the RAF for being gay. Now he's at the forefront of the new permanent memorial to be built at the National Arboretum to remember LGBT veterans.

The government has given the charity, Fighting With Pride, £350,000 to construct the memorial at the 150-acre site.

It follows a government report into the treatment of LGBT veterans between the years 1967 and 2000 when it was illegal to be gay in the British military.

Kevin tells Malcolm Boyden his story, about having to keep his sexuality, and who he really was, secret from the employers of his dream job, serving his country.

The pair reflect on what the memorial will mean for the campaigner, who was in the room when Rishi Sunak made the announcement, apologising on behalf of HM Government for its treatment of LGBT veterans.
