Baby Reindeer: ‘Real’ Martha threatens legal action against Netflix

A woman has said she intends to sue Netflix over her alleged depiction in the new show.

Mark Stephens, a media lawyer for Howard Kennedy, says the woman that has allegedly been identified as the ‘real Martha’ could launch legal action over her depiction in the show and the online abuse she’s received.

Baby Reindeer is based on the real-life experience of the comedian Richard Gadd and has topped Netflix viewing charts around the world.

Questions are now being raised about whether enough has been done to protect the identity of the real people behind the characters.

Since the hit show started streaming, viewers have been trying to track down the stalker in the show - the ‘real’ Martha. And over the weekend, a woman told the Scottish Sun that she intends to sue Netflix.

Richard has asked fans to stop speculating about the real-life people behind the series.

Mark Stephens told 5 Live Breakfast’s Rachel Burden that it’s part of a wider problem and that the “immense popularity of true crime series where some of the most horrific and blood-curdling crimes are bandied about as light entertainment, has desensitised society to a point where we’ve forgotten what’s appropriate.â€

Recalling the public’s reaction to the disappearance of Nicola Bulley, he says: “Remember when members of the public were trampling through the crime scene or with the recent speculation surrounding Kate Middleton’s whereabouts.

“There’s this insatiable appetite to uncover the truth regardless of what the consequences are.â€

Mark thinks the ‘real Martha’ could launch legal action for invasion of privacy, harassment and also potentially defamation.

5 Live have approached Richard Gadd's PR company and Netflix for a statement but we are still waiting for responses.
