Eurovision: “Croatia is the one to beat.”
Eurovision super fan speaks ahead of Saturday’s grand final.
James Marriott is a massive Eurovision fan and has been speaking to 5 Live Breakfast about this week’s semi-finals.
The theme this year is "united by music" and it's the seventh time Sweden has staged the contest, after Loreen won last year.
James said being at the arena was “fantastic” and that Sweden really know what they’re doing.
“They put on a brilliant show. The arena is absolutely buzzing.”
He said a lot of “Eurovision nonsense” was going on at the semi-finals and that a lot of the songs this year are “bonkers”.
“I think Finland is setting the bar in terms of weirdness. So if you didn’t see that, there’s something to really look forward to.”
Some people texting 5 Live say they think this year’s UK entry is slightly risky.
“It is a little bit,” James said. “In terms of the staging, it’s perhaps a little bit bolder than the UK has done before.”
“The song probably didn’t live up to the hype when Olly Alexander was announced as the entrant. It’s a little bit disappointing and doesn’t go anywhere.”
James says “Croatia is the one to beat. Great song, really great performance. It sends the crowd absolutely wild. And Eurovision hasn’t been in Croatia since 1990 so I think a few people will lean towards giving Croatia their vote.”
