Life after a heart rupture: 'I never considered doing the Iron Man until this happened'
Simon Page was 19 years old when his heart ruptured, leading to a week in ICU.
But he's back to fighting form - and is training for the Iron Man challenge in Tallin, Estonia.
The race, which Simon himself refers to as a "triathlon for nutters", includes a 2.3 mile (3.8km) swim, 111 mile (180km) cycle and then a 26 mile (42km) run.
Then a Sports Business student at University of West England, Simon was gutted to miss out on six weeks of exercise after his injury. He says this was a "motivator" to push himself with the challenge of the Iron Man.
"I remember when I was in that hospital bed, thinking ‘I'd do anything to just be outside doing some sports’" Simon told 5 Live Drive.
He's already run a half marathon and will be doing a half Iron Man in Jönköping, Sweden as preparation. But Simon says he still faces some resistance - from his mum.
"Each day she messages me, ‘Are you sure you got clearance?’" he joked.
