How a Beckenham hairdresser created the Ziggy Stardust look
One Thursday afternoon in 1970 a customer by the name of Mrs Jones entered a salon in Beckenham, south-east London. She got chatting to the hairdresser who called Suzi and mentioned that her son, David, played in a band. A few weeks later Mrs Jones came in with David's wife, called Angie, who wanted a haircut herself.
Angie was so delighted with Suzi's skills with the scissors that Suzi is invited to their home to meet David himself - who was now going under the name of David Bowie. She styles his hair into a spiky red feather cut, which he loves, and thus the look of Ziggy Stardust is born!
Now 74, Suzi Ronson herself re-counts this charming tale.
