A428 roadworks reveal Roman ‘failure’
The discovery was made near the Black Cat Roundabout in Bedfordshire. Wooden remains of two Roman wells - one of which had collapsed before it could even be used - have revealed what archaeologists describe as “a failure of Roman engineering on an industrial scale”. The dig has been taking place as work continues on between the Black Cat and Caxton Gibbet and roundabouts. Natalie Malcolm hears what the finds can tell us about problem solving 2000 years ago.
