How are we going to keep warm this winter?
The winter fuel payment cut, is expected to save the Treasury £1.4bn this financial year
Pressure has been mounting on The Prime Minister , but he's still defending winter fuel payment cut, telling the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ over the weekend and his ministers today that "difficult decisions" must be made to fix the country's finances.
George King has been finding out what the cut might mean for keeping the heating on this winter in Suffolk.
Jack Abbott, Labour MP for Ipswich, said:
“The decision to means-test the Winter Fuel Allowance is not one that anyone wanted to, or expected to, take.
“But, when the Chancellor set out the £22 billion black hole in the public finances, left and covered up by the previous government, it was clear that inaction would put the UK’s financial stability at risk. The last Conservative government’s recklessness got us in this mess - it now falls on the Labour Party to get us out of it.
“The government is unequivocally committed to the triple lock on pensions, which saw an increase of £900 in the state pension this year.
“The government has also announced plans to extend the Household Support Fund to target help to those who most need it, increase uptake of Pension Credit to ensure the 800,000 eligible pensioners who didn’t claim it under the last Conservative government do so, and upgrade millions of homes through the Warm ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½s Plan."
