Is China helping Africa realise its potential?

The growing partnership raises concerns about debt, dependency and power imbalances

China is now Africa’s biggest trading partner, with 20% of exports going to China and 16% of imports coming from there, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

At the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) meeting earlier this month, President Xi Jinping promised $50 billion for African development, including military support and new jobs.

While this partnership boosts development, it’s also raising worries about debt, dependency and power imbalances.
