Leominster traders struggle as roadworks continue

Leominster traders face 'daunting' months ahead as roadworks hit businesses' takings

Traders in Leominster say the months ahead are 'very daunting' for business due to major roadworks in the town centre. Since the renovations started in May, some shops have seen their takings fall by 75%.

Herefordshire Council is spending £3 million regenerating the town centre, laying new pavements and road surfaces in areas like the High Street and Corn Square.

The works were originally due to finish this month, but issues with drainage and materials mean they won’t be completed until the end of November.

Matt Hutchinson reports from Leominster.

A Herefordshire Council spokesperson said: “The improvement work currently underway in Leominster is the final stage of a £3.4m Leominster High Street Heritage Action Zone programme (including £1.5m funding from Historic England) which has delivered £651,000 of grants to improve historic buildings including many business premises, £17,000 for shop front grant improvements, £36,000 to provide free local wi-fi which has benefitted many of the market traders, and the £2.1m public realm and highways improvement which will deliver a range of benefits for the town, including a vibrant new streetscape that will be a more attractive environment for local people and draw a greater number of visitors.

“We have also received positive feedback as to how the work completed to date has already enhanced the look of the town centre. We would like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience while the remainder of the works are completed. In response to requests from local traders we have introduced 2 hours of free car parking, have held business support advisory sessions, and are providing £2,000 to help promote local events”.
