“We didn’t let this disease take us over as a couple"
The former Lionesses captain Steph Houghton has released an autobiography called Leading from The Back, where she opens up about her husband’s battle with motor neurone disease.
She told 5 Live Breakfast that she and her husband – the former Bradford City defender Stephen Darby – are trying to be “as positive as possible” but that when she recorded the audiobook “I could hear my voice cracking”.
Steph said she had felt fit enough to keep on playing, but she decided to retire from football to spend time with Stephen and “make memories”.
“When something like this disease happens, it’s important that you live each day as it comes.”
