Chancellor backs '£1bn' inland freeport plans
The chancellor Rachel Reeves has backed plans to create England's only inland freeport near East Midlands Airport in a speech outlining plans for the UK's economic growth.
The freeport was initially given formal government approval in 2023 and seeks to use tax incentives to attract investment. It is currently in the hands of North West Leicestershire District Council planners.
Rachel Reeves said developing a logistics and manufacturing site near Castle Donington was "a huge vote of confidence in the East Midlands and the UK".
