'Larry beat boxing legends - he deserves a statue'

The family of a heavyweight boxing champion say they hope their campaign to get a statue of him in Leicester will help secure recognition for his exploits in the ring.

Larry Gains was born in Canada but fought at Granby Halls and Leicester Tigers' Welford Road Stadium and won bouts against boxing greats during a 146-fight career between 1923 and 1942.

A petition has been launched to support the campaign for a statue in Leicester to recognise the heavyweight boxing champion.

Larry's great grandson Michael Gains told ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Leicester's Ady Dayman that he was well liked in the city and it would be great to honour him.
