Bench for Barks a 'great testament' to Chris Barker, says Sean Clohessy

Former Southend United defender Sean Clohessy says the Bench for Barks campaign is a 'great testament' to his former Blues captain Chris Barker, who took his own life in 2020.
The Bench for Barks campaign, run by the Southend United Ex-Players Association, raised £4,000 to being two benches, provided by charity Legend on the Bench, to Roots Hall as they aim to tackle the stigma of talking about mental health.
Roots Hall is the first football ground in England to house these benches, which are lit through the night and have QR codes to information about Barker and contact information for people struggling with mental health.
Barker played for Southend from 2010 to 2013, wearing the captain's armband for two seasons.
Former Tottenham midfielder Micky Hazard, ambassador for Legend on the Bench, unveiled one bench at the east gate of Roots Hall and one at the Shakespeare Drive entrance. Hazard said the benches portray the message 'out of the darkness comes the light of day'.
