Nursery owner challenges Education Secretary over funding for free childcare

Nursery owner from Peterborough, Gordon, challenges Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson over funding for free childcare.

Speaking on the Martin Lewis Podcast, Gordon tells Bridget, “Every year from now on, whatever the minimum wage and National Insurance increases are, you have to match that with the increase in [childcare] funding”.

The Education Secretary tells Gordon, “We have increased the funding rates and we have increased the money going in, but I hear what Gordon has to say, and I take this sector seriously”.

She says the £75 million expansion grant "does respond to some of the pressures" the [childcare] sector are feeling, and that the money will go out through local authorities.

Bridget adds that the Early Years Pupil Premium is available for all providers and "will help" disadvantaged children.
