The UK, France and Canada have issued their harshest criticism yet of Israel's actions in Gaza. In a joint statement, they say that they "strongly oppose the expansion of Israel's military operations," adding that "the level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable." Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hit back, insisting that the war could end if Hamas returned hostages, laid down its arms, agreed for its leaders to go into exile and allowed Gaza to be demilitarised.
