The Geordie who escaped Dunkirk to protect Churchill
It’s 85 years since 330,000 British troops were rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk after they were cornered by the German army in 1940.
Facing almost certain defeat Sir Winston Churchill sent hundreds of boats to bring them back.
19 year old Sydney Hetherington from Newcastle was there – he was part of the guard tasked with keeping the Nazis back to help the troops escape.
He spoke to reporter Anthony Day in 2019.
