The 1645 Siege of Leicester
The 1645 Siege of Leicester was a grim chapter in the history of the city.
380 years ago, in 1645, the Siege of Leicester took place during the English Civil War.
It was a grim chapter in the history of the city. The local population, overwhelmed by Royalist forces, surrendered only to be faced with thirty six hours of the most dreadful retribution.
There was looting, murder and rape on a large scale. Over 600 people lost their lives and the town was emptied of anything of even the slightest value. So dreadful was the treatment of Leicester that it became a rallying cause for the Parliamentarians.
Now, it might have been 380 year ago, but to this very day, if you know where to look, you can see the preparations the town made to try to defend itself.
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Leicester’s Ben Jackson went for a look around.
Produced by Pete Wardman.
