Nina Hughes retires from boxing
Essex-born boxer Nina Hughes has announced her retirement.
The former WBA female bantamweight world champion announced her decision on social media after winning a fight over Bank Holiday Weekend at York Hall, despite being put on the canvas for the first time in her career.
In a statement, the 42-year-old said: 'Halfway through the fight, I realised something - I didn't really want to be there. The hunger and desire just wasn't there like it used to be.
"I've had a great career. Becoming WBA world champion in Dubai at 40, in 5 fights and under a year, against all odds - nothing will top that.
"At 42, I planned to retire at the end of the year with one last big fight but after that performance I know it's time to hang up the gloves and go out on a win and move on to the next chapter in life whatever that may be."
Hughes told ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Essex Breakfast host Sonia Watson said it was "a nice way to go out" in front of her family.
