Stephen Daldry on the closure of iconic Sheffield venue

Legendary Sheffield music venue The Leadmill has announced it will close after a 45 year history of hosting some of the biggest bands in the UK. It started the careers of a host of famous local acts like Pulp, Arctic Monkeys, Reverend and the Makers, and The Long Blondes.

The venue said it had lost its long-running battle against its landlord and would quit the building within three months.

Among the first generation of regular gig-goers was Stephen Daldry, then a student in the city, now one of the UK's best-known directors of stage and screen. He's been reflecting on its importance to the Sheffield's cultural life.

The music you heard was 'Babies' by Pulp, 'Florescent Adolescent' by Arctic Monkeys, 'You're Gorgeous' by Babybird and 'Tonight the Streets are Ours' by Richard Hawley - all Sheffield artists.
