MPs will debate and then vote later today on whether to decriminalise abortion in England and Wales. Two Labour MPs have tabled amendments to the Crime and Policing Bill following concerns that more women are being investigated by police on suspicion of illegally ending a pregnancy. It's thought 60 criminal inquiries have been brought in England and Wales since 2018. Six women have appeared in court in the past three years charged with ending or attempting to end the pregnancy when the foetus is more than 24 weeks old - which is illegal. Some doctors have expressed concern saying that legal changes could lead to risks to women’s health because of the dangers involved with self-administered late abortions.
