Births at baby unit paused for 'up to six months'

Campaigners say parents to be across Leicestershire and Rutland will lose out on a precious resource with the temporary closure of a midwife led birth unit.

Health bosses say they're pausing services at the St Mary's birth centre in Melton. The trust said it would be pausing births and in-patient postnatal care at the centre from 7 July. The pause is expected to last for "up to" six months while work is carried out to determine next steps.

Chief Nurse at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust Julie Hogg told us there are other ways women can have access to the birth they want.

Campaign group 'Save St Mary's Birth Centre group' is hoping to reverse the decision.

Helen Cliff from the Save St Mary's Birth Centre group told us earlier she can't understand why services here are being cut back when they're flourishing elsewhere in the country, and MP for Melton Ed Argar spoke of his concerns to ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Leicester's Ady Dayman.
