In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the prototype RTV31 tracked hovercraft, or ‘hovertrain’ was tested in the Fens – with the ultimate aim of reaching speeds of up to 300mph.

But it wasn’t to be. And little evidence of the experiment exists.
