77. July - Results Day for shallots

Down to earth advice on growing your own fruit and vegetables with allotment gardener Terry Walton, from his plot in the Rhondda Valley

Down to earth advice on growing your own fruit and vegetables with allotment gardener Terry Walton, from his plot in the Rhondda Valley.
The allotment is in full growth in the warm weather. The carrots are at a good height so it's time to start watering to encourage longer vegetables. The sweetcorn is displaying tassles on the top and on the cobs below ensuring pollination will take place.
The broad bean harvest is complete so it's time to cut the plants back almost to the base and leave in the ground to release nitrogen. Terry makes the most of the bed by adjusting the pH by adding lime, making it ready to receive winter cabbage.
The shallots are ready to come out and Terry grades them to decide whether they'll be used for pickling or cooking. The ground is dusted with blood, fish and bone and rock dust ready to host a tray of young lettuce.
