Actor Ray Winstone shares his views and memories about London with Robert Elms.
Ray Winstone is a television, stage, and film actor with a career spanning five decades.
He was born in Hackney in 1957 and began his life in Stratford, before moving to Enfield when he was seven. His mother Margaret had a job emptying fruit machines, and his father, Raymond J. Winstone, ran a fruit-and-vegetable business.
His career began in 1979 in a ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ production of the play Scum, before appearing in Quadrophenia the same year. In the half a century that’s followed, he’s appeared in numerous TV series and films, including Nil By Mouth, Sexy Beast, Vincent and The Sweeney. Winstone is best known for his ’hard man’ roles, usually delivered in his distinctive London accent. His most recent role was as incarcerated gangster Bobby Glass in The Gentlemen, directed by Guy Ritchie.
