Baroness Kennedy condemns ‘humanitarian city’ plans in Gaza
She speaks to the World at One’s Sarah Montague.
Israel's defence minister Israel Katz has said he's instructed the military to come up with a plan to establish what he calls a new “humanitarian city” in the south of Gaza.
Under his plan, eventually the whole two-million strong population of Gaza would be located there.
In an interview broadcast on 8th July 2025, the World at One’s Sarah Montague spoke to Baroness Helena Kennedy KC, a human rights lawyer who last year served as an expert on a panel convened by the Internation Criminal Court.
Baroness Kennedy said the plan would force Palestinians into a “concentration camp”.
In response the Israeli government said: "We refute these claims, they are simply false and not grounded in any reality.
“The notion that Israel is creating concentration camps is deeply offensive and draws a comparison to the Nazis. Israel adheres to the Geneva Convention."
