The new system is based on technology used in CT scanners, and passengers can now carry liquids and electronic equipment in their bags.
Managing director of the airport, Amy Smith, said that she hopes that the new system will provide an experience which is as quick and efficient as that found in the largest international airports.

Penryn Arts Centre is organising an art installation to celebrate 50 inspirational 鈥榃omen of Cornwall鈥�.
The project is led by ceramic artist Katie Bunnell, who wants to honour women 鈥渨ho have made meaningful contributions to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly鈥�. She decided that the women could be living or dead, real or mythical - so it wasn鈥檛 easy to decide who would be on the list.
Last year, the centre asked for suggestions from the public and received more than 200 names. Fifty of these were chosen for the installation by an advisory group.
This list is very diverse, and amongst them are to be found the famous, like Barbara Hepworth and Helen Glover, as well as the not so famous.
Ms Bunnell will now add images of these women to 50 ceramic plates, which will be put on display in the arts centre.

Two beavers have recently been born in the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Their parents, Twiggy and Byrti, were released over the last two years into an enclosure which had been built for them on the Heligan estate.
The species went extinct in the UK 400 years ago, but the Lost Gardens of Heligan has been working with the Welsh Beaver Project, the Beaver Trust, and Natural England to restore the species to this country once again.
Toby Davies, wildlife co-ordinator at the gardens said that the young beavers were about two months old, but they had not been named yet.
As well as beavers, the Heligan estate has restored water voles and glow worms to the gardens, and they hope to add red squirrels in future.
