Andrey Kurkov - following in the footsteps of George Orwell?
Andrey Kurkov is a Ukrainian novelist, living and working in a war zone. He has written 19 novels, the best known of which are probably Death and the Penguin and his most recent Grey Bees. He was longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2023 with 'Jimi Hendrix, Live in Lviv'. Audrey Carville caught up with him en route from Kyiv, through Poland and onwards to Edinburgh, for the book festival. They spoke about the risks involved in political satire in a country which has been invaded, Donald Trump's recent summit with Vladimir Putin, and his reaction to being described as an Orwell for the 21st century.
