“We nearly doubled their population” - Stranded in Gander on 9/11

On 11 September, 2001, a small Canadian town called Gander became a haven for thousands of airline passengers and crew stranded after the 9/11 terror attacks.

Captain Beverley Bass was piloting one of the planes ordered to land in Gander, Newfoundland.⁣

The Canadian town opened its doors to almost 7,000 stranded people - providing residents with beds, food, medicine and clothing. They entertained the passengers throughout their stay and lifelong friendships were made.

"The population of the town at that time was 9,400 people. So we nearly doubled the population."

Their heartwarming story went on to inspire the musical Come From Away.
