'Government has failed my veteran son'

The grieving mother of a Worcestershire soldier says veterans don't have enough support when they re-join civilian life.

Dawn Turner, who lives in Eckington, founded the charity Stepway in 2019, aiding former service personnel with their mental and physical health.

35-year-old Robert Homans, who completed two tours of Afghanistan, was found dead at a house in Worcester last month. His mother says she believed he took his own life after years of struggle with his mental and physical health.

Tom Edwards reports.

A statement from the Ministry of Defence said: 'Our deepest condolences go out to Robert’s loved ones, and our thoughts and sympathies are with them.

'While we cannot comment on individual cases, we want to ensure no veteran falls through the cracks. The Government has invested more than £25 million into Operation COURAGE, so veterans in England can continue to access specialist NHS mental health and wellbeing services.'
