Mountsorrel’s ancient Butter Market
Mountsorrel’s Butter Market was erected in 1793 to protect stallholders from the weather.
The Butter Market In Mountsorrel was put up in 1793 by the Lord of the Manor Sir John Danvers.
It was erected to protect stallholders from the weather, and to replace the original medieval market cross which Danvers had moved to his estate at nearby Swithland Hall, where it still stands.
The structure was especially used by women selling butter on market day – hence its common name The Butter Market.
