Mr Trump told reporters at the White House that he believed his Russian counterpart wanted to make peace. Ahead of the meeting, Mr Putin has praised Donald Trump's efforts to end the war as energetic and sincere. President Volodymyr Zelensky has not been invited to the talks in Alaska.
