Where did Earth's water come from?
Answering your questions about life, Earth and the universe
Was water delivered to planet Earth from space? Were our great oceans filled by asteroids and comets hurling water at the planet, one snowball at a time? And if not, where did all the water come from?
These days water is everywhere; it covers 70% of the planet and makes up more than half of every human… but here’s an enigma – by rights, it shouldn’t be here. According to the theory of how the earth formed, 4.5 billion years ago, conditions were so hot that any water should have been split into its constituent gases: hydrogen and oxygen. Water shouldn’t have been an ingredient in the recipe for our planet. And yet, here it is, all around us and inside us.
One CrowdScience listener wants to know where it came from, and presenter Caroline Steel is diving in to the science. Always thirsty for knowledge, she’ll be meeting scientists who have studied rocks from the moon and discovering a newer, radical, story of our water. One where the water in our rivers and streams is even older than the sun.
