Can science improve the human brain?

Could the brain augmentation of science fiction become a reality?

You can improve your brain function by engaging in regular physical activity, learning new skills, eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of sleep. Which is great, but it’s all a bit boring.

What CrowdScience listener Mariana from Mexico wants to know is whether the sort of brain augmentation she’s seen in sci-fi could soon become reality.

So… what about brain surgery to boost your intelligence? To help you live longer? Or cure a disorder you've been grappling with all your life? Presenter Alex Lathbridge seeks out some of these brain boosters himself, exploring emerging technologies that might allow us to commune with computers, gain new capabilities and push the limits of the human brain.

Along the way he interrogates the ethical implications of the breakneck speed of progress in brain augmentation research.
