Kangaroo care for premature babies
How a mum’s skin can save her baby’s life.
In a hospital ward in Bogota, Colombia, premature babies are getting kangaroo care.
They are not in an incubator, or surrounded by medical equipment. They’re wrapped tightly against their mother’s skin.
The method was developed in Colombia in the late 1970s. They couldn’t afford incubators and a massive proportion of premature babies weren’t surviving.
One doctor tried out this simple skin-to-skin system. They found it was not only saving babies lives but helping them to thrive. Now the method has spread around the world.
