Catching the ‘bike bus’

How kids are finding safety in numbers on their bike ride to school

How can you get kids to school safely in a way that’s good for the environment and they get some exercise too?

We find out how pupils from Spain to Slovenia are joining together in long pre-planned convoys known as “bike busses”. Teachers and parents volunteer to accompany the joyful multitude of cyclists, which pick up children from pre-determined stops along the way.

And we’re looking at another way to reduce transport pollution. Diesel motorcycle taxis are a popular way to get around across the world, but changing to electric versions has proved too expensive for many.

Now in Nairobi, Kenya, riders are being encouraged to buy electric bikes without batteries. It means they’re far more affordable at the outset, and they hire batteries from special charging stations for a similar price to gas. It also means they can replace batteries in minutes without waiting around for a charge.
