Is A Climate-Friendly Death Possible?
Why people are exploring alternatives to burials and cremations on environmental grounds.
Across the world millions of people have their final wishes fulfilled in a traditional way. Burials and cremations have been the most popular form of funeral, but now there's a growing demand for alternatives because of a sense of unease at the amount of climate and environmental damage they cause. Rev Mpho Tutu Van Furth speaks for the first time about her father Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s wish to have a greener cremation in South Africa. In New Delhi we find out how traditional wood-burning funeral pyres are being adapted to reduce the deforestation and pollution they cause. Plus, a new report from scientists lays out in detail for the first time the climate impact of all the main funeral options. Our presenter Jordan Dunbar considers his death and how he might make his last act on earth a cleaner one.
