OCEAN CRUISE
Sandi Toksvig takes to the high seas to explore the watery world of an ocean cruise. The number of passengers from the UK has doubled in the past decade and more than a million travellers took an ocean cruise last year.
Sandi is joined by Robin Maclear, publisher of World Cruising magazine; Iwein Maassen, author of The Contemporary Cruise; Peter Rushton arranger of lecture programmes for cruise lines and Gary Williams, singer and cruise entertainer.
They discuss the latest destinations and favourite ports of call; discover what is converting people to a floating holiday; ask whether passengers are spending the “children’s” inheritance or taking a budget-trip; is it an eco-friendly way of travelling and do passengers really put on a pound in weight a day?

Iwein Maassen is a Dutch communications expert and photographer who has travelled the globe on cruises. Iwein has just published a book entitledThe Contemporary Cruise filled with photographs he took on his travels ranging from expeditions to alternative cruises on tall ships.
is a Cruise Entertainer. Gary recreated the role of Frank Sinatra in the theatre’s “The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas” and regularly appears in cabaret and concerts. He has entertained countless numbers of passengers singing on cruise ships.

Peter Rushton ran away to sea as a young man and eventually became a Union Castle line officer in the sixties. For several years now, Peter has devoted his working life to the cruise industry with his wife Rosemary. They specialise in arranging Lecture and Enrichment programmes for many major cruise lines. Peter also gives lectures onthe ports en routeand talks on maritime history.
