 Listen to Excess Baggage for
13ÌýDECEMBERÌý2008
Sandi Toksvig meets Guy Browning whose autobiography is entitled The Maps of my Life. Weaned on maps, educated by maps and ever so slightly in love with maps they discuss how this obsession charted his unsteady progress from toddler to young man via the furthest corners of the Alps, Niagara Falls, the Mediterranean, Central America and darkest Chipping Norton.
Ann Daniels is one of Britain’s best known female polar explorers and is currently training for a new trip to measure the thickness of Arctic ice cap. In an expedition called the Catlin Arctic Survey, Ann will be responsible for the navigation and the food during the trip which has taken some very logistical planning. She talks about the reality of surviving in temperatures of -50C and also about her previous encounters with polar bears.

From a very young age he was weaned on maps, educated by maps and ever so slightly in love with maps.

Ìý is one of Britain’s leading female Arctic explorer. She will be heading off to the Arctic on her next expedition in February with Pen Hadow, the first man who walked to the North Pole solo and unsupported from northern Canada and award-winning polar photographer Martin Hartley. The new expedition, called the Catlin Arctic Survey, is not just another polar expedition. This is different as during the course of the expedition, the team will be measuring the thickness of the Arctic ice cap, using a special radar. The data will be analysed by scientists in order to determine just how long we have got before the ice cap melts for good. Ann Daniels will be responsible for the navigation and the food during the trip.
